Identify my hub type and PCD

Lazy hubshub drums and disc hubs and rotors all come in a range of different stud patterns and bearing combinations. When you are replacing a hub it is important to identify the correct hub from your trailer and we can show you how to do that.

All of the hub assemblies at Trailer Spares Direct come with seals, bearings, studs and stud nuts and dust caps.

Lazy hubs, hub drums and disc hubs and rotors all come in a range of different stud patterns and bearing combinations, so when you are replacing a hub it is important to identify the correct hub from your trailer. For example, it is possible to have a Ford stud pattern with LM (Holden) bearings.

Why Identifying Your Trailer Hub Stud Pattern Matters

Correct hub selection is essential for safe trailer operation. A mismatched trailer hub stud pattern can result in improper wheel seating, reduced load security, and potential wheel separation under load. When you're replacing a hub, measuring your existing stud pattern ensures your wheels fit securely and your bearings perform reliably over long distances.

Measuring PCD

  1. Identify the number and size of studs on your hub,
  2. Measure the PCD (Pitch circle diameter). The diagram below illustrates how to do this on 4, 5 and 6 stud hubs.

  3. Identify inner and outer bearing. Bearings have the number stamped into them or you can measure them with verniers. Read our article on bearing identification for details

PCD Measurement Technique by Stud Count

For odd stud patterns (such as trailer hubs with 5 stud configurations), measure from the centre of one stud to the furthest edge of the opposite stud. For even stud patterns (4 or 6 studs), measure directly from centre to centre of opposite studs. Accurate measurement is critical — use a vernier calliper if available and measure in millimetres for precision.

Matching Bearings to Your Trailer Hub Stud Pattern

Once you've identified your trailer hubs and bearings specifications, ensure your replacement hub includes the correct bearing pair. Australian-spec trailer hubs typically use Koyo (JTekt) Japanese bearings for durability and longevity.

LM bearings are the standard for Holden-pattern hubs, whilst Slimline (SL) bearings are commonly paired with Ford trailer hub PCD configurations. Always cross-reference your original bearing numbers (stamped on the bearing race) with your hub's stud pattern before ordering.

Inspecting Bearing Condition

When inspecting your existing hub, check both the inner and outer bearings for signs of wear. Look for discolouration (rust-brown indicates moisture ingress) or excessive play in the bearing race. If your bearings are worn, they should be replaced alongside the hub — never reuse old bearings with a new hub, as the spindle and bearing surfaces wear together over time.
